The Child Called It
I was touched by
this young boy’s strength and courage. I
would never question a mother's love for her children, but often times as we
bare the burdens of life some people are able to survive while others aren't.
I
believe that David Pultzer’s intent was to gain composure through sharing his
story with others who experience the same trauma as well as those who have thankfully
not experienced abuse. Mr.Pulzer has done an amazing job with showing his
readers that abuse is not okay. During Mr.Pultzer's recount of his past he
shares with us the love he has for his mother and father regardless, of the
pain they may have caused him. At first Dave's family was the stereotypical all
American family. His mother was amazing always making sure to entertain her
children's needs. Suddenly with time everything changed when Pelzer's mother
started drinking. He became the "family slave" constantly being
referred to as "the Boy." Dave was tortured by his mom daily, being restricted
from meals and being challenged to eat from the trash can.

Renae, I really enjoyed your summary about this book! I have heard a lot about it and I think it's extremely sad what happens to this poor boy in the story.
ReplyDeleteI remember back in freshman year, I tried getting back into reading since I had such an amazing reading teacher that inspired me to. This was one of the first books that I read and it nearly made me cry. As I was close to the end, I started to get all teary, and that something considering how cold I can be at times. I remember reading the second book after this, this makes me want to reread this book just because it was so great. I enjoyed the summary as well, it brought back good memories of me actually enjoying reading.
ReplyDeleteThis book is extremely well written, even though this story is so sad its diction is fantastic your explanation is well put and on point with the story. I think I'll go read this again once I finish with the collaboration.
ReplyDeleteI've never read this book before but your summary makes it sound like it is a very emotional story. A child should never have the feeling of being unloved by their own parent(s) because he or she is suffering from child abuse.
ReplyDeleteWow, Renae, I agree 100 percent with you. I read this book 2 years back and It really blew my mind. In fact, it changed my perspective on the way I viewed my life, and how easy I had it compared to many people such as David growing up. Reading your post brought back nostalgia in a positive way, because through reading this book I found that if you never give up hope, and fight to stay alive, you'll see what doesn't kill you really makes you stronger, and you'll have a better life for it. Thanks for a great post!
ReplyDeleteYour passage makes me want to read this book so much... child abuse is a horrible thing and parent's should know the difference between abusing a child and just punishing him/her. Great summary.
ReplyDeleteI've heard alot of good reviews of this book but never really decided to read it. From your summary I could tell it's something many people can relate either themselves or from other peers. I'm sure this book really recognizes how it feels like to be a abused child. From this blog I believe this might be the next book on my list.
